Who came first?

Archaeologists are scrambling to find evidence of the earliest known eggs, which they believe could be 1.5 billion years old. Do we believe them or the ever-mythical question "Who came first, the chicken or the egg?" Maybe someone genetically mutated a chicken randomly? I guess we can't ever know for sure.
